The polygraph. Good or bad?

Does your agency use polygraph or computer voice stress analysis (CVSA) tests when vetting candidates?  If so, at what stage in the hiring process does this come into play?  What is the cost to administer the exam?  Is it conducted in house or through another agency or private company?

Some of our nation’s largest law enforcement agencies abandoned the use of the polygraph or CVSA testing for screening their potential employees, citing different reasons for their decisions.  For example, the Pennsylvania State Police believed the additional step created unnecessary delays and led to applicants taking jobs elsewhere (Note: They have since re-instituted the exam).

“Beating the box!”  It sounds like something out of a spy movie, but I’ve heard candidates admit to lying and securing employment.  It’s real.  At what rate does it occur and is it even measurable?  I’m unaware of studies examining this phenomenon.  How much faith do you place in the results?

What are the most common topics that applicants lie about?  Is it illegal drug use, undetected criminal activity, agencies applied with, or something else?  Can you verify these factors through other means of investigation?  With the use of LEAD™, you can check issues surrounding previous applications with greater ease than ever before.  It should deter candidates from lying about this topic.
